Over the last couple of months, a number of people have asked me how I make my pictures. Judging from the glazed eyes I'm normally faced with, you'd be surprised how tricky a question it can be to answer. It's one of those things that's very difficult to put into words.
So I thought I'd make a little video.
And since you only ever get to see the finished article, I also thought it'd be nice to illustrate the journey each painting takes before I'm finally happy that it's finished - the different directions it almost took; the various "nearly-but-not-quite".
Here you go…
As you can see, it goes through several progressions before I'm satisfied. But the process of making is incredibly absorbing (not to mention thrilling, when the picture finally begins to show signs of promise).
I'd recommend digital painting to anyone. Whether or not the end result is any good, it allows you experience a different part of yourself. As an artistic process, digital painting allows for a more fluid (almost real-time) link between the canvas and your own subconscious - there's none of this waiting-for-paint-to-dry mallarkey.
I don't want to get too bogged down in trying to explain with words - I can already see some people's eyes beginning to glaze. All I would say is try it yourself, you'll love it.
Go out, take a look at the world. Find out what gets your imagination firing and then see where it takes you.
